Genus
Graphiurus
Description
Graphiurus Smuts, 1832 (African dormice)
Graphiurus is a genus endemic to sub-Saharan Africa. While their monophyly and position within other glirids is well established, the taxonomy of the genus is not resolved, as the numerous described species often significantly overlap in their ecological and morphological traits (Onditi et al. 2026). There are two well-supported monophyletic clades within the Graphiurus genus, an early-diverging West-African clade, comprising of three species-level lineages, and the second clade, which includes all the remaining lineages, spanning over the whole sub-Saharan Africa.
