Description

Praomyini is a diverse group of African rodents within the subfamily Murinae. The tribe comprises 14 genera, including both species-rich and widespread groups such as Hylomyscus and Praomys, and monotypic or geographically restricted genera (such as Stenocephalemys or Chingawaemys, which are endemic to the Ethiopian Highlands).

Praomyini rodents occur across sub-Saharan Africa and inhabit a wide variety of environments, from tropical forests and savannas to alpine habitats, croplands and human settlements. Molecular studies suggest that the group underwent a rapid diversification during the Late Miocene, with most modern genera emerging during the Pliocene (Aghová et al., 2018; Nicolas et al., 2021).
