The genus has a wide distribution across Sub-Saharan Africa, mostly confined to tropical latitudes. It occurs from Sierra Leone and Guinea in the west to Ethiopia and Somalia in the east, and south to Namibia, Botswana and South Africa. The centre of diversity for this genus is in East Africa. They occur in a variety of different wooded habitats such as rainforest, coastal and riparian forest, montane forest, and dry savanna and woodland. The forest species are typically arboreal, but the savanna species regularly descend to the ground to move between trees as well as for foraging (Monadjem et al. 2015). One species has its distributional limit in southern Ethiopia.
